itchy Pervy

For the third exhibition at the Hotel Michele, Matthew Smith has developed a series of 26 ceramic works through which he has used an economy of different abstract gestures that when titled and aligned along the full length of the gallery wall reveal a sophisticated and playful system of visual languages. Using clays with different textures, Matthew part glazes some pieces whilst leaving others completely unglazed, adding another dimension to the rhythm of this collection.

Protruding from the gallery on the other side of the room, work number 26 looks like it is perilously close to or falling off the wall, giving the viewer further insight in to the artists sense of humour as well as pointing towards the sometimes precarious spatial conditions under which these works were created.
